About
Many coastal communities in Sumatra, Indonesia, rely on wood burning stoves, and, consequently, mangrove trees, as their primary means of fuel. Known for their ability to store massive amounts of carbon, mangrove trees are crucial backbones to Sumatran ecosystems. The communities of Aceh, particularly in Alue Naga village are resourceful and resilient, yet they grapple with economic instability and environmental degradation – affecting their ability to fish and maintain their traditional ways of life.
HF Partnership
Supported by the Honnold Foundation, Natural Aceh is using solar energy to transform life for fishing households in Aceh, Indonesia. This project will provide homes with clean and reliable electricity, empowering residents to maximize economic opportunity, while significantly decreasing the pressure to cut down surrounding mangrove forests.
The project will build on the community’s resourcefulness and resilience by integrating solar energy solutions with local economic development initiatives, including training programs in renewable energy management. This initiative not only preserves vital mangrove ecosystems but also enables community members to thrive while actively participating in sustainable practices for future generations.
