About

The Papaturro community, located in a remote area on the Pacific Coast of Guatemala, is characterized by its strong leadership and resourcefulness, particularly among women, who play a vital role in decision-making. While facing challenges such as geographic isolation and limited economic opportunities, the community is eager to embrace sustainable solutions that honor their relationship with the environment.

We cannot promote new conservation practices if we do not lead the way in transforming our productive systems. We must remind ourselves of how we have historically lived in harmony with nature, respecting it and keeping in mind that the health of an ecosystem represents the health of everyone.
— Manuel Farfán, Executive Director of ARCAS

HF Partnership

With support from the Honnold Foundation, ARCAS is transforming the energy landscape of the Papaturro community by installing solar photovoltaic systems in 35 homes. This initiative not only provides clean and reliable electricity but also eliminates the need for wood-based cooking fuels, contributing to the conservation of mangrove ecosystems. By integrating community training and leadership development, the project empowers residents to actively engage in sustainable practices, fostering a sense of ownership and enhancing their quality of life.
