About

The Tusobola Women Initiatives Network (TWIN) empowers Ugandan women and girls to reach their full economic potential. Founded and operated by Ugandan women, TWIN works directly with women in rural villages to promote equality, protect women’s rights, and fight for access to resources.

Established in 2017, TWIN has quickly grown into a network of 35 villages in Uganda’s Luuka and Iganga districts. Since then, they’ve helped over 8,500 people access crucial healthcare services, increased access to education for over 500 girls, and led infrastructure improvements for eight Ugandan schools, reaching over 3,600 children.

HF Partnership

The Honnold Foundation originally partnered with TWIN to support solar energy installs on seven rural health centers. In 2022, HF is proud to continue the partnership by supporting rooftop PV systems and battery storage for an additional eight hospitals that previously lacked access to electricity.

In Uganda, women suffer from extremely high rates of infant and maternal mortality. Field hospitals are ill-equipped and oftentimes lack electricity. Therefore, women lack access to refrigeration for vital medicines, lighting for nighttime health emergencies, and electricity to power medical devices. Ultimately, HF’s partnership with TWIN dramatically increases healthcare across 15 communities serving over 30,000 people.

In addition to the installation, TWIN has also trained 21 community members as solar energy technicians, ensuring the panels’ upkeep and ownership across their entire lifespan.
